In short, Metal is the only music that really makes any sense to me. And Slayer, to me, is the purest representation of what Metal is, was, and continues to be. FUCKIN' SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!
The history: (long as fuck)
I come from 2 parents that were simply rock fans. My mom is/was a Mainstream Rock fan for the majority of her life. In the '80's and early '90's, which was her "wild teenage days", she was always in to bands like Poison, Guns 'N' Roses, Motle Crue, and that Garbage. The "pop" or "Glam" metal scene, for the most part. About as heavy as she ventured was Metallica, some Megadeth and a little bit of Pantera. She wasn't a big fan though, never was much into Thrash. My dad listened to the same stuff. From the time he was a kid, he was a soldier in the Kiss Army. My dad started off with the basic Hard Rock. Kiss, Sabbath, ACDC, Zeppelin... But as he got older Metal came more and more in to being and he pretty much listened to every kind, other than the then relatively unheard of Death Metal and Black Metal. Everything from the gay glam scene, to Iron Maiden, to the big 4 of Thrash. Had all of Metallica's good stuff, and none of the bull shit. Had quite a bit of Megadeth and Anthrax as well. Slayer? He wasn't that big on them I can tell. Only albums I found in his collection were Reign In Blood (casette, and completely ruined), South of Heaven and Decade of Aggression. When Pantera came about when I was still sucking my thumb, he got in to that as well.
What the fuck does this have to do with anything? Theese are my musical building blocks. In 1991 my parents were going to see one of the concerts on the Clash of the Titans tour, with me chillin' in the womb, to be born a week or 2 later. Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, with Alice In Chains as an opening act. My first concert was Slayer, and I had a very unique seat in that place. Mommy and Daddy were mainly there for Megadeth and Anthrax. From the time I was a fucking fetus I was a headbanger. Well needless to say when I was a baby I had no musical preference. But it's a sweet concept. When I was a Toddler all the way through most of my childhood, I simply hated Country. Otherwise I was not too picky. My favorite bands up till I was 11 were Kiss, ACDC, Metallica and... Ok, I admit it, for some stupid reason I liked the Beatles. But once I was about 12 it was suddenly cool to listen to rap and at that point I was all for being one of the "cool" kids. So from 12-13 I was a wigger. Pants hangin' off my ass, shirt 2 sizes too big, thought 2pac was god... Then I hit that stupid ass "Juggalo" stage. From 13-15. During that time, when I was about 14, Slipknot rekindled my interest in real music. Metal. For a while, my main bands were Slipknot, Mudvayne, Pantera, and Deicide. I gradually got more in to the "Nu Metal" scene, dabbling in some Death Metal.
Then my dad came back in to play. He was going through some old CD's of his while I was sitting my scrawny ass listening to Korn by the computer. My dad found a Korn CD he'd bought when they were just coming on the scene, and tossed it to me. I put that in, and I liked it and immediately became interested in what else he had... I was re-introduced to Metallica, when they were worth a shit, as well as Megadeth, and for the first time: Anthrax, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, GWAR, etc. Then I saw Panteras first 3 albums and immediately started going through the stacks of cds and cassettes myself. That's when I saw it:
Reign In Blood. I recognized Slayer's name, but couldn't put any music to match it to in my head. It looked like a sick band, so I popped it in. To my disappointment, it didn't work. I later was playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, listening to the V-rock station, but barely paying attention. The song Raining Blood came on and I was immediately hooked. At that point, I had no Idea what it was called, or who it was by. But when I heard the last line ("Now I shall reign in blood!") I made the connection and immediately asked my dad if that was them. Sure as shit, yes it was. Within the next week I found South of Heaven and Decade of Aggression in my dads collection. Since then I've been hooked. Been a Metal head ever since. I've went on to discover many other bands, and sub-genres of Metal, but my absolute favorite is Slayer. I now have every album on CD (Including World Painted Blood!), and 3 on Vinyl. Haunting The Chapel and Hell Awaits (re-release special edition picture discs) and South of Heaven. The South of Heaven is an origional, not a reprint. Not that it matters much, I just think it's cool. I've only seen them live once, but it was insane, and I'm looking forward to doing it again!
Re: Play Slayer (Halo 3) with Slayer on Xbox LIVE!
